Can Images help with search engine positions?

In themselves an image is not accessible to a search engine so any text within will not be considered when ranking your site. However the name of the image can help. Better to have an image name which contains some of your keywords than an image called DCM1295.jpg. So best practice would be to name your images according to the page content tedious I know but it is a beneficial part of obtaining good rankings.
